Home to stars like Aaron Kwok and Joey Yung, Happy Valley is one of Hong Kong’s most exclusive residential areas.

Supposedly its English name is ironic, referring to the death toll from disease in the area back in the 19th century, which prompted the establishment of Hong Kong’s first Christian cemetery.

Happily, the neighbourhood has only grown in esteem and value since, with property agents often dividing the valley into distinct lower and upper sections. While the upper section, away from Happy Valley Racecourse, is the preserve of celebrities and the super-rich, the lower section remains more affordable.

Aside from its celebrity residents, the neighbourhood has long been defined by the absence of an MTR station. Many residents even enjoy this, believing that it means the area retains a quieter, more intimate atmosphere than other neighbourhoods along Hong Kong Island’s north shore.

Not that the area lacks transport – minibuses connect to Causeway Bay with its malls and MTR, while the tram links to both ends of Hong Kong Island and bus routes stretch out to Kowloon.
