The Southside has become one of Hong Kong’s fastest growing districts, well known for its burgeoning number of art galleries, restaurants, luxury flats, hotels and more.

Neighbourhoods like Wong Chuk Hang and Aberdeen have seen substantial growth, while historic and scenic Repulse Bay is easily accessible by road and even via hiking trails. Its beaches and ocean views are a major selling point of residences commanding some of the highest prices in the city.

The bay’s history is romantic to say the least – some say the area was a haven for pirates in the 19th century before they were “repulsed” by the British Royal Navy. What we do know for sure is that the Repulse Bay Hotel – built by the Kadoorie family in 1920 – was visited by celebrities, such as authors George Bernard Shaw and Ernest Hemingway, actors Marlon Brando and William Holden, and Charles and Diana, the Prince and Princess of Wales. The hotel even played a significant role in Eileen Chang’s 1943 novella Love in a Fallen City and director Ang Lee’s 2007 Lust, Caution.

Today, the facade of the hotel remains and the beach is still a draw for those seeking a sunny getaway, but looming over all are luxury high-rises, including one such property built on the former hotel’s location, famously with a hole to foster good feng shui.

Improved public transport has given residents and tourists alike better access to other Southside neighbourhoods such as Wong Chuk Hang, South Horizons and Stanley – while bringing weekend crowds to Repulse Bay’s idyllic surrounds.

As such, Repulse Bay is not necessarily the exclusive playground it once was, but property prices remain high for all the reasons given above, with many prospective buyers keen to make Repulse Bay their home.
