Few holiday activities are more under threat from climate breakdown than skiing and other winter sports.

Nevertheless, operators of some of the biggest resorts are tackling the problem by introducing more eco-friendly practices ahead of this winter’s ski season, many of which involve whisking skiers to the top of slopes as efficiently as possible.

Japan’s best-known ski resort and world-famous powder-skiing location – where the season starts early, in November – sees the opening of a cutting-edge gondola this winter.

Replacing the Center 4 lift, the Ace Gondola will take skiers to the top of Ace Hill and feature Wi-fi in all 54 of its 10-person cabins, along with heated seats and ski racks. Two cabins will have see-through floors. The new gondola will be 50 per cent faster and carry more skiers than the previous four-person chair, so should also help alleviate lift queues.

Just 2.5 hours from Sapporo’s Chitose Airport, in Hokkaido, Niseko offers a wide range of accommodation options, one of the most luxurious being the Setsu Niseko, voted World’s Best New Ski Hotel at the World Ski Awards in 2023. The judges were impressed by the hotel’s “beautifully appointed” apartments and the purity of their Japanese design along with dining provided by chefs of Michelin-star acclaim and world-class wellness facilities.
