Jia’s debut feature Xiao Wu (Pickpocket) set the tone for much of his filmography, with its gritty focus on the urban poor in Shanxi, the director’s home province, against a backdrop of China’s economic liberalisation. Stars Wang Hongwei and Hao Hongjian.
