Your father is changing after quitting smoking. It is normal for a person to get cravings for a while. Typically, cravings happen when someone stops smoking because their bodies miss the drug. Their mood can shift when these cravings occur. This can make them less patient.

While this is challenging, he should find other ways to express his frustrations. He should not be lashing out at you.

There are ways to help your father. However, it is not your job to change him. He has to change himself. Still, you can encourage him. Tell him you believe in him and that he can reach his goal.

Exercising with him is a great way to lift his spirits. Even taking leisurely walks can ease restlessness and improve his state of mind. Show your support by suggesting a bonding activity.

You can also encourage your father to connect with people who support his goal to quit smoking.

If your father’s symptoms become overwhelming and difficult to manage, he should reach out to a doctor. He can get help to ease cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

He can also contact the Integrated Smoking Cessation Hotline of the Department of Health at 1833 183 for more information.

Talk it out

  • Do you know who to call when you need help?

  • Have your parents ever lashed out at you?

This question was answered by the Department of Health under Shall We Talk, a mental well-being initiative launched with the Advisory Committee on Mental Health.
