Along the Cumberland River just north of downtown Nashville, in the US state of Tennessee, tourists on party boats float past the recognisable skyline.

But they also can see something a little less expected: hundreds of sheep nibbling on the grass along the riverbank.

Zach Richardson is the urban sheepherder who manages this flock. He said tourist boats go out of their way to let their passengers get a closer glimpse of the Nashville Chew Crew.

They can be seen grazing a few hundred yards away from densely populated buildings.

“Everybody that comes out here and experiences the sheep enjoys it more than they would [seeing] someone on a lawnmower or a guy with a leaf blower or a weed eater,” Richardson said.

Using sheep is not a new landscaping method or way to cut the grass, but more urban communities are opting for it in the modern day.
