I refer to the letter, “MAGA moral decay will outlive Trump’s tenure” (November 11). Your correspondent is wrong: American democracy has not failed just because one doesn’t agree with the election results. Donald Trump was elected after winning the Electoral College vote. As vote counting continues, he looks likely to have won the popular vote as well.

Shakespeare wrote, “Speak the speech, I pray you, as I pronounced it to you, trippingly on the tongue”. Trump spoke the speech Americans wanted to hear. He understood that politics is domestic and played to his audience’s needs. It was the power of democracy in action.

America’s choice a poor reflection on its moral fabric

The sense of shock and dismay linger as the world’s second-largest democracy willingly chose to hand power to a vitriolic autocrat who incited the Capitol riots and who proudly flaunts overt right-wing, divisive agendas.
