Hong Kong has a unique opportunity as it navigates the complexities of post-pandemic recovery. The global Muslim travel market is forecast to grow to US$225 billion by 2028, and as it grows our city must take full advantage of this potential market.
Recent efforts by government officials and community leaders to encourage halal tourism can bring economic benefits and take place in a culture of inclusiveness befitting Hong Kong’s characteristic diversity. The government is laying the groundwork for Hong Kong to become a leading Muslim-friendly destination by encouraging better dining options, offering prayer facilities and promoting halal-certified restaurants.
This comes at a good time as both the Middle East and Southeast Asia have seen an uptick in tourists. A resumption in direct flights can bring in more Muslim travellers and help boost Hong Kong’s economy significantly.
Making Hong Kong more welcoming to Muslim visitors is not solely the government’s responsibility, though, as community engagement is equally important. Vincent Cheng Wing-shun and other lawmakers have stressed the need to create a supportive environment for these visitors.

The Incorporated Trustees of the Islamic Community Fund of Hong Kong’s ambitious goal of certifying more than 500 halal restaurants by 2025 is under way. We have certified 142 so far, but there is more work to be done. The proposed expansion of halal dining options is a brilliant opportunity to present our local cuisine in a respectful and appropriate way to Muslim travellers. Training hospitality staff to be aware of and better serve the requirements of Muslim visitors can improve their overall experience.
