It’s 2024, the Paris Olympics. Vivian Kong Man-wai has just scored a historic win in the women’s épée final. This is followed by another gold by foilist Cheung Ka-long.

Everyone cheers and celebrates in Hong Kong. Well, maybe not everyone. For some people, it’s still 2019, with the protests, riots and crazy social divisions where people are pigeonholed as either yellow or blue, anti-government or pro-Beijing.

Sour grapes? Envy? Post-traumatic stress disorder? It’s hard to tell.

It’s true some “blue” people are still bitter about the unrest in 2019 but nothing matches the obsessiveness of many from the “yellow” camp.

Some of them may have resettled in Britain, Canada and Australia, but still claim to be fighting for Hong Kong. Other keyboard warriors continue carrying on their struggle on websites such as lihkg.com.

Why not try to add a bit more positive energy in your new home overseas by cheering and supporting your adopted home teams at the Olympics? Admittedly, some former Hongkongers who have migrated have cheered for our Olympians, but these are more low-key.
