Editorial | Doraemon success a sign Hong Kong mega subsidies not always necessary
- City tour of blue cartoon robot cat attracted 5 million people and boosted food and beverage sales, all without any government handouts
The magic tricks pulled out from the pocket of Doraemon have captivated generations of fans over the years. A month-long showcase of the beloved Japanese comic figure has proved to be just as spellbinding.
It is a stellar example of how successful mega events can unite and lift the city.
Credit goes to the organiser and its partners for conjuring up a mesmerising experience for locals and visitors. Featuring free and ticketed exhibitions, drone shows, transport rides and pop-up displays of the iconic blue robot cat, the “100% Doraemon & Friends Tour” has delighted millions.
Social media was awash with images of the popular cartoon characters gracing the city’s harbourfront and other tourist sites. Overseas followers were apparently envious and asked for their turn for a similar whimsical journey.
The spectacle attracted more than 5 million people and boosted food and drink takings by 30 per cent at the shopping centre venue. Spending at the exhibition souvenir shop averaged HK$1,000 (US$128.33) per person, with organiser AllRightsReserved making a whopping “nine-digit” revenue.
