It is time for Hongkongers to consider another Covid booster
- There has been a worrying series of outbreaks in care homes and hospitals, prompting calls for high-risk groups to update vaccination jabs
Since life returned to normal it can seem as if the Covid pandemic never happened. Masks among a sea of unmasked faces serve as a reminder that we have not entirely put it behind us.
For the sake of public and personal health it is wise to take heed. A wave of Covid infections among people in vulnerable settings is worrying health authorities.
The city has recorded outbreaks in care homes and hospitals on the back of a global surge in cases.
This has prompted officials to appeal to high-risk groups to update booster jabs. In that regard, a government update of vaccination arrangements is timely.
“Outbreaks in care homes are worrying,” Professor Lau Yu-lung, chairman of the Scientific Committee on Vaccine Preventable Diseases, told a radio programme. He cited seven outbreaks from the end of July to early August among 60 patients.
Officials also reported that 20 patients aged 47 to 94 in the infirmary unit at Grantham Hospital in Aberdeen had tested positive since July 31. Lau said crowded conditions and poor air circulation could be involved.
