Exhibition at Hong Kong Palace Museum serves as reminder of relationship with China and why it is important for city to ensure it continues

An exhibition opening in Hong Kong this month will showcase almost 150 artefacts from the Palace of Versailles in France and Beijing’s Forbidden City. The event, at the Hong Kong Palace Museum, features exhibits from the 17th and 18th centuries.

It is one of around 300 cultural activities to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Such activities serve as a timely reminder of the long-standing relationship between China and France and the importance of ensuring it continues.

President Xi Jinping made the country his first port of call when visiting Europe in May. On arrival, Xi spoke of the ties, over six decades, being an example of how countries with different social systems can exist in peace.

His counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, has also highlighted the importance of the relationship. But those ties face testing times amid tensions between China and Europe over trade tariffs and the war in Ukraine.
