How Trump beat expectations for a stunning 2024 US election victory

Donald Trump’s victory over US Vice-President Kamala Harris was powered by wins in swing states and red states. With wide backing from angry working-class voters and non-white Americans, the former US president also outperformed his previous election showings.
Trump even held his own in leafy suburbs, defying polls that predicted he would face a harsh verdict from well-educated voters and especially women who told pollsters they were angry over the rollback of abortion rights.
In the end, 78-year-old Trump won wider margins than before, despite a criminal conviction, two impeachments during his first term and warnings from his former chief of staff that he is a fascist.
“It’s a political victory that our country has never seen before,” Trump said in a speech in the early hours of Wednesday in Florida.
In state after state in Tuesday’s vote, Trump outperformed what he did in the 2020 election while his Democratic opponent Harris failed to do as well as Joe Biden did in winning the presidency four years ago.
