US Vice-President Kamala Harris said on Monday she would take a cognitive test in response to jabs from Donald Trump, and challenged the ex-president to take one too as mental fitness becomes a battle line in the White House race.

Democratic candidate Harris has repeatedly said her 78-year-old Republican opponent, now the oldest presidential candidate in US history, is increasingly “unhinged” and unfit to lead the country again.

Trump has, meanwhile, has unleashed a special array of personal – often condescending – attacks against 60-year-old Harris, from calling her “lazy” – a word long used to demean black people in racist terms – to insisting she’s a “stupid person” and asking whether she is “on drugs”.

He’s also called Harris, the first woman of colour to lead a major-party ticket, “slow” and has accused her of being a “a very low IQ person”.

Harris was asked in a CBS interview segment released on Monday if she would take a cognitive test, as Trump had called for on social media.
