Ukrainian forces shelled Russia’s southern Belgorod region on Sunday, killing one person and injuring more than a dozen, including two children who were seriously hurt, regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said.
Gladkov, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said one person died in the village of Shagarovka near the Ukrainian border.
Three people were injured in Shebekino, located on the border, and Gladkov reported attacks on at least one other village.
In shelling earlier in the day, 11 people were wounded, including two boys who underwent surgery after sustaining serious injuries, one with extensive wounds on both legs. Doctors were considering sending them to Moscow for further treatment.

Gladkov said residents provided first aid before emergency services arrived, shielding the injured from falling shrapnel.
The attack damaged 22 flats and eight private homes as well as more than 20 vehicles, he said.
Reuters could not confirm independently the accounts. Ukrainian officials made no comment.
Ukrainian forces have long subjected the town of Belgorod and nearby districts to shelling and other attacks. Ukrainian forces launched an incursion into the adjacent Kursk region last month and senior officers say their troops have occupied dozens of settlements.
Also on Sunday, a Ukrainian helicopter on a military training flight crashed, killing its two-member crew, the Air Force’s university said.
The Kharkiv Air Force University in a post on Facebook said investigators and officials from Ukraine’s defence ministry were working to determine the cause of the crash.

At least 47 people, including five children, were injured on Sunday after Russian missiles struck a shopping centre and events complex in Ukraine’s northeastern city of Kharkiv, officials said.
Rescuers and volunteers carried injured civilians to ambulances outside the shopping complex. Shattered glass and debris were strewn across the ground and people fled to a metro station for safety.
The attack prompted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to renew calls on allies to allow Kyiv to fire Western-supplied missiles deeper into enemy territory and reduce the military threat posed by Russia.
“All the necessary forces of the world must be brought in to stop this terror,” Zelensky said on his Telegram channel, in response to the Kharkiv attack that Ukrainian officials said involved at least 10 missiles.
“This does not require extraordinary forces, but enough courage on the part of the leaders – courage to give Ukraine what it needs to defend itself.”
Earlier in the day, Russia said Kyiv had launched one of the biggest drone attacks against it since the full-scale war began, targeting power plants and an oil refinery, while Moscow’s forces made further gains towards a key town in eastern Ukraine.
