Alphabet planet: NASA Earth Observatory delivers stunning photo series
The challenge laid down to with the orbiting space station was to find formations and features of planet Earth that spelled out the letters of the alphabet
Nasa’s Earth Observatory boasts a stunning collection of thousands of photographs taken from the space agency’s satellites or snapped by astronauts as they circled the planet. Adam Voiland, a science writer with the observatory, decided to set himself the challenge of finding photographs of natural features that resemble the letters of the alphabet.
“A few years ago, while working on a story about wildfires, a V appeared to me in a satellite image of a smoke plume over Canada,” he said. “That image made me wonder: could I track down all 26 letters of the English alphabet using only Nasa satellite imagery and astronaut photography.”
Here are the successful results of that challenge.
