India’s Twitter alternative Koo finds overnight success in Brazil
- The app, with its yellow bird logo, was downloaded over a million times within 48 hours of being launched in Portuguese
- The platform offers similar features to Twitter and counts some major celebrities among its users – as well as fake profiles
Amid uncertainty about the future of Twitter, huge numbers of users in Brazil appear to be flocking to a very similar alternative from India.
Koo, which replaces Twitter’s blue bird with a yellow bird and offers similar features, says it was downloaded more than a million times in Brazil within 48 hours after launching in Portuguese, India Today reported on Tuesday.
CEO Aprameya Radhakrishna told Brazilian newspaper Extra that Koo had only registered around 2,000 Brazilians by last Friday.
Among the million users are said to be several accounts of major celebrities.
Besides a growing distrust of Twitter, many in Brazil seem to be joining the social network due to its name, and Koo sounds like cu (“ass” in Portuguese), which has led to countless jokes on both Koo and Twitter.
