US Vice-President Kamala Harris formally concedes election to Donald Trump
Earlier, Harris called Trump directly, with her campaign chair saying she told him ‘she hopes he will be a president for all Americans’
US Vice-President Kamala Harris officially conceded the presidential race to Donald Trump on Wednesday, as she vowed to provide assistance to her Republican opponent to ensure a “peaceful transfer of power”.
Addressing supporters at Howard University in Washington, she said that while she lost the election, she would never give up the fight for the “ideals at the heart of our nation”.
“My heart is full today, full of gratitude for the trust you have placed in me, full of love for our country and full of resolve. The outcome of this election is not what we wanted, not what we fought for, not what we voted for, but … the light of America’s promise will always burn bright as long as we never give up,” she said.
She would continue to fight for women, she said, so that they would have “the freedom to make decisions about their own body”.
She also directly addressed young voters: “It is OK to feel sad this morning, but please know it’s going to be OK … sometimes the fight takes a while, that doesn’t mean we won’t win.”
