The Post has put together a snapshot list of public figures who have made significant contributions to philanthropy.
Louis Koo

The 53-year-old is one of Hong Kong’s best-known movie icons. His latest film success is the action blockbuster Twilight of the Warriors: Walled in, set in the world of gangsters in Kowloon Walled City.
His charitable contributions have earned him the nickname “Principal Koo” among his mainland fans.
He has donated more than HK$30 million (US$4 million) to build more than 100 schools for the underprivileged students in China.
Koo has also funded 18 clinics, 750 wells and one small-scale water conservancy project.
In 2014, he joined the Ice Bucket Challenge, an activity to promote awareness of the disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and encourage donations for research.
In 2020, he donated all his film earnings to create a fund offering subsidies to Hong Kong actors affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Han Hong

The famous 53-year-old singer and composer was born in southwestern China’s Tibet autonomous region.
Her hit song Heavenly Road presented fans with a romantic image of the Tibetan Plateau.
Since 1999, Han has provided financial support for more than 200 mainland orphans.
Her non-profit organisation, the Beijing Han Hong Love Charity Foundation, founded in 2012, has donated more than two billion yuan (US$280 million) to various causes.
Among the recipients have been children left behind in rural areas by parents working in big cities, Alzheimer’s sufferers and earthquake reconstruction projects.
Yao Chen

The 45-year-old actress and philanthropist is known for her focus on refugee help, disaster relief, and education for impoverished children.
She gained popularity in 2005 for her role as a heroine in the Chinese TV series My Own Swordsman and has 83 million followers on Weibo.
In 2013, she became the first Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in China.
She has visited refugees in the Philippines, Thailand, Ethiopia, Lebanon, and Pakistan, using her influence to advocate for refugee children’s education.
Cai Lei

Cai is the ex-vice president of Jingdong, one of China’s biggest e-commerce companies.
In 2019, 46-year-old Cai was diagnosed with ALS, a condition that severely impacts mobility, breathing, communication, and mental health. He supports research into the illness.
In 2022, he and his wife began live-streaming sales on Douyin to raise funds and Cai has announced he will donate 100 million yuan (US$14 million) to support ALS research.
In July, he launched a joint lab with Peking University of Chinese Medicine to combine traditional Chinese medicine with modern biotech.
Recent mainland reports revealed that Cai’s condition continues to worsen.
