World-renowned Hong Kong superstar Chow Yun-fat has voiced his deep affection for his home city and its distinct “charming and arrogant” Cantonese dialect in an interview on YouTube.
Media outlet HK01 reported that the film legend made the remarks in a new episode of the YouTube programme Shu Shu De Ai (Uncle’s Love).
Chow’s iconic status and illustrious career extends far beyond Hong Kong, with his notable performance in Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon resonating internationally. The film made history in 2001 as the first Chinese-language film to win an Oscar.
His collaboration with Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End amassed more than US$963 million worldwide, crowning it the box office winner of 2007.
Chow is also admired beyond the silver screen, for his philanthropic endeavours and approachable demeanour.
In a 2018 interview with Hong Kong film website JayneStars, Chow shared his plans to donate his entire wealth – a staggering HK$5.6 billion (US$716 million) – to charity.
