Airline to launch first cross-border C919 flight on Hong Kong-Shanghai route
The China Eastern Airlines service will operate as daily return flight and is part of efforts to expand use of C919 globally
China Eastern Airlines will establish its first commercial C919 route outside the mainland, flying between Shanghai and Hong Kong from January 1, according to state-owned broadcaster CCTV.
Hong Kong’s transport minister on Thursday also welcomed the coming route launch while hailing China’s home-grown aircraft as “a significant breakthrough in the country’s civil aviation technology”.
The new service will operate as a daily return flight and is part of efforts by China to expand the use of the C919 globally, according to mainland media outlets.
The inclusion of Hong Kong as a new destination means China Eastern’s C919 network will now cover nine cities.
China Eastern is the first airline to operate the C919 and currently has nine of the aircraft flying various domestic routes within mainland China.
