Tolls for private cars at Hong Kong’s Tai Lam Tunnel to drop by up to 69% from May 2025
Transport authorities say motorists will be charged maximum of HK$45 during peak hours on weekdays and Saturdays
The tolls for private cars using Hong Kong’s Tai Lam Tunnel may be lowered by up to 69 per cent when the government reclaims control of the passage in May next year, with drivers set to pay HK$45 (US$6) during peak hours.
Unveiling a plan to implement time-varying fees, transport authorities said on Wednesday that motorists would be charged a maximum of HK$45 during peak hours on weekdays and Saturdays at the 3.8km (2.4 mile) tunnel that connects Yuen Long with western Tsuen Wan.
Drivers will be charged HK$30 during normal time slots and HK$18 during off-peak hours between Monday and Saturday. They will pay HK$18 throughout the day on Sundays and public holidays.
The normal time slot is between 9.45am and 5.15pm, while off-peak hours are from 7pm to 7.15am.
Compared with the current toll of HK$58, authorities said the reduction rate was between 22 and 69 per cent.
“We believe that an appropriate downward adjustment of the tolls for the Tai Lam Tunnel can divert part of the traffic from Tuen Mun Road and Tolo Highway to the Tai Lam Tunnel, thereby improving the traffic conditions of the two highways and easing public commuting in the New Territories West and North,” a spokesman said.
