155 bus routes to be affected as 6,000 riders hit roads in Hong Kong Cyclothon
Some roads in West Kowloon and New Territories South will be closed in stages from 1am on Sunday, police say
Hong Kong’s biggest cycling event will affect more than 150 bus routes, with some major roads and tunnels also closed, when 6,000 riders hit the streets on Sunday.
Participants in the annual Hong Kong Cyclothon will include Olympic bronze medallist Sarah Lee Wai-sze, three-time Asian Games gold medal winner Wong Kam-po and four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome, according to the organiser.
The day’s events, which will be held from 5.15am to 2pm on Sunday, are also expected to attract 30,000 people to a new carnival in the West Kowloon Cultural District.
The Cyclothon, organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, is open to both amateur and elite participants.
Cyclists in the 50km and 32km events will ride on new routes in Kowloon and the New Territories this year. The 50km route will include four tunnels and three bridges.
Police and the Transport Department said on Wednesday some roads in West Kowloon and the southern New Territories would be closed in stages from 1am.
Closures, which are expected to end at 3.30pm, will affect the Kowloon-bound lanes of the upper level of the Tsing Ma Bridge, Eagle’s Nest Tunnel and Sha Tin Heights Tunnel, among others.
