Hong Kong flag carrier Cathay Pacific Airways has once again fallen under scrutiny after a junior pilot was suspended over a failed alcohol breath test administered before he was scheduled to fly to the city from Sydney.

The airline on Thursday confirmed an exclusive report from the Post a day before, with the carrier saying the second officer had been selected for screening by authorities in Australia.

A Cathay spokesman said safety was the airline’s “overriding priority” and it had zero tolerance for staff who failed to comply with its alcohol and other drugs (AOD) policy.

Hong Kong’s civil aviation authority said it was concerned about the incident and told the airline to investigate and submit a report.

In light of the incident, the Post takes a look at some of the rules that Cathay pilots need to follow.
