Hong Kong truck topples over in tunnel heading airport after slamming into wall

  • Part of tunnel has been closed; driver rescued from inside vehicle

A dump truck toppled onto its side after slamming into a wall inside a Hong Kong tunnel on Wednesday, forcing the closure of the airport-bound tube.

The affected lanes of the Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Tunnel were expected to remain closed into the early hours of Thursday, the Transport Department said.

Vehicles were being allowed through the Tuen Mun-bound tube under a “two-way” arrangement, it said.

Police said the truck was passing through the tunnel when it crashed soon after midday.

A police spokesman said emergency personnel attended the site after receiving multiple calls for help and rescued the driver, who had been trapped inside the truck.

Authorities were working to tow away the truck and fully reopen the tunnel, the spokesman said.

A video posted online showed a stretch of about 10 metres (32.8 feet) of tunnel was damaged and the truck had toppled onto its right side.
