Shops at two major MTR stations were left without electricity at noon on Wednesday, hours after a power outage trapped residents in lifts across the city and shut down traffic lights on Hong Kong Island.

The MTR Corporation said power supply at some facilities at Kowloon station and Hong Kong station was affected at about 12.08pm, before it was fully restored at around 1.25pm and 2.50pm, respectively.

The company added the outage affected lights, escalators, air conditioners and shops in both stations, but train services continued to operate as normal.

At Hong Kong MTR station, more than 20 shops temporarily closed down at noon, while a few restaurants continued to serve customers in the dark. Stores could only accept cash during the halt.

The MTR Corp said a preliminary investigation found the outage at the stations was not related to the one that occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, which was triggered by a fault in HK Electric’s power supply system.
