Hongkongers take 1 million more trips over Christmas holiday than in 2018
But mainland Chinese arrivals dropped by nearly 100,000, from 756,000 in 2018 to 657,000 this year
Hong Kong residents made 1 million more trips during this year’s Christmas holiday week compared with 2018, while mainland Chinese arrivals dropped by 100,000 over the same period.
During the seven days from December 23 to 29 this year, Hongkongers made 2.74 million outbound trips, a 60 per cent rise from 1.67 million in 2018, and up from 2.34 million in 2023.
Hongkongers embarking on outbound trips peaked on Christmas Day of this year with more than 569,000 leaving the city. The figure for 2018 was 396,000.
Visitors from the mainland, which usually made up 70 per cent of the total arrivals, surpassed 657,000 over the seven-day period, a slight increase from 650,000 in 2023.
But the number was still 13 per cent lower, or 99,000 fewer, than the 756,000 recorded in 2018.
The Immigration Department only provided the passenger traffic data from December 23 to 26, and that of December 29 for 2018. Only five days of the holiday week were included in the calculation by the Post.
