Tremors felt in Hong Kong as earthquake strikes Taiwan

Observatory receives more than 10 reports from residents of minor shaking as magnitude 4.7 quake hits south-southwest of Jiayi

Hong Kong residents reported being shaken by minor tremors following a magnitude 4.7 earthquake in Taiwan on Friday.

The Hong Kong Observatory said the quake struck at 8.40pm, with the epicentre located south-southwest of Jiayi and about 630km (391 miles) east of Hong Kong.

The weather authority added it received more than 10 reports from residents of minor shaking that lasted several seconds.

It said initial estimates placed the local intensity at II on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, meaning the tremors could be felt by people at rest or on upper floors of buildings.
