Hong Kong may issue T1 warning over weekend as Tropical Cyclone Yinxing edges closer
Forecaster says Yinxing may approach the city between Thursday night and Friday
The Hong Kong Observatory may issue the No 1 standby signal over the weekend as Tropical Cyclone Yinxing is expected to enter within 800km (497 miles) of the city as early as Thursday.
The forecaster said Yinxing might edge closer to the city between Thursday night and Friday before it moved westwards across the northern part of the South China Sea.
Yinxing, which means ginkgo seeds in Chinese, is now located east of the Luzon Strait in the Philippines.
“Depending on the distance between Yinxing and the Pearl River Estuary, its change in intensity and local wind conditions, the Observatory will assess the need of issuing the No 1 standby signal later Friday to early Saturday,” the weather forecaster said on Wednesday.
It noted that under the influence of the northeast monsoon, there were uncertainties in the movement and intensity of Yinxing after entering the South China Sea.
“Although the circulation of Yinxing is relatively small, under the combined effect of the northeast monsoon and Yinxing, it will be windy over the waters and high ground of the coast of southern China over the weekend,” the Observatory added.
