The Immigration Department said on Thursday that it was providing advice and assistance according to the wishes of the family members of the woman, who reportedly died on October 20.

The department said it had reached out to the Commissioner’s Office of China’s Foreign Ministry in Hong Kong and the Chinese embassy in Hanoi once it received the family’s request for assistance.

“The embassy has contacted the family members of the person concerned and followed up with relevant local authorities to expedite the processing of the person’s after-death matters, including the processing of the death certificate,” the department said.

Officials would maintain close contact with the family and the embassy, it said.

Phu Quoc has gained popularity among Hongkongers, who are entitled to a visa-free stay if they enter Vietnam through the island’s airport, a perk that is not available when using other checkpoints in the country.
