Hong Kong’s fifth hotel turned youth hostel opens its doors with 200-hour activity component
Residents could potentially visit the headquarters of the People’s Liberation Army as part of hostel’s programme offerings
Hong Kong’s fifth hotel turned youth hostel has opened for applications, with residents expected to take part in 200 hours of activities annually including a potential visit to the headquarters of the People’s Liberation Army in the city.
Operator Yan Oi Tong, a renowned charity in the city, said on Monday that residents at its youth hostel at the Regal Oriental Hotel in Kowloon City would be free to sign up for activities organised under different themes including conservation, national education and community services.
“We will definitely organise activities with national education elements,” said Henry Cheng Wai-hong, chairman of the Yan Oi Tong board of directors.
“We cannot control who will join or will be free to join but we encourage them to participate in more of these activities.”
He added that the NGO was still finalising the functions for residents, capped at 160, while they could also apply for exchange activities in the Greater Bay Area.
The bay area is Beijing’s initiative to turn Hong Kong, Macau and nine Guangdong cities on the mainland into an economic powerhouse.
Other activities also cover volunteer services, with Cheng highlighting that the operator would explore arranging for residents to participate in future trial runs at Kai Tak Sports Park.
