Solo hiker dies after going missing in Hong Kong’s northwestern New Territories

Police find Yau Kwok-yee, 67, at bottom of five-metre drop near Ng To Shui in Tuen Mun after he was reported missing on Sunday

A solo hiker has been found dead in Hong Kong’s northwestern New Territories after he went missing on Sunday, police have said.

The force said officers found 67-year-old Yau Kwok-yee early on Tuesday at around 6.30am at the bottom of a two-metre (6.6-foot) drop near Ng To Shui, Tuen Mun.

The Fire Services Department later clarified the drop was five metres.

Yau was unconscious when he was discovered close to Tsing Tai Stream. He was certified dead after being brought by helicopter to the headquarters of the Government Flying Service at the airport.

The circumstances behind Yau’s death were not immediately clear.

Police, firefighters, the Civil Aid Service and the Government Flying Service began searching for Yau after his wife reported him missing at around 11pm on Sunday, with drones deployed as part of the effort.
