3 Hongkongers evacuated from Lebanon as Israel intensifies military operations
Immigration Department says evacuation coordinated with foreign ministry’s office in Hong Kong and Chinese embassy in Beirut
Hong Kong’s Immigration Department said on Wednesday that the evacuation was coordinated with the foreign ministry’s office in the city and the Chinese embassy in Beirut.
They were safely transported by vessel and a flight was arranged, a spokesman said.
Tensions have been escalating in the Middle East, with Israel intensifying its military operations in Lebanon, its northern neighbour, raising the prospect of an all-out war in the region.
Israel said on Wednesday that it had carried out “targeted ground raids” in Lebanon, a move it claimed was directed at Iran-backed Hezbollah.
The Hong Kong government raised its outbound travel alert for Lebanon to black on Monday. It advised residents to avoid all travel to the country and urged those already there to prioritise their safety and leave immediately.
