Hong Kong marked National Day on Tuesday with a raft of activities as the city went all out to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China on October 1.

Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu gave a speech at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, with local and central government officials as well as top business leaders attending.

The city was holding a record-breaking 400-plus events while cinemas, restaurants and shopping centres also offered special discounts.

A spectacular fireworks display drew hundreds of thousands of people to the harbourfront on Tuesday night although a drone show ahead of it was cancelled at the last minute due to atmospheric conditions.

Local businesses were also hoping the city could attract an influx of mainland Chinese tourists to help bolster the retail scene as the seven-day “golden week” holiday began.
