A male passenger in the taxi escaped unscathed in the accident at 880 Lai Chi Kok Road early on Sunday.

Authorities closed a section of the road and diverted a number of bus services because of the two-metre-deep sinkhole and flooding which had affected three lanes.

Police learned of the incident at around 12.30am. The taxi was heading along the road when it became partially submerged in the flooded four-by-four-metre sinkhole.

The driver, 59, and his passenger, 47, managed to escape from the taxi as it sank, police said. The force said the driver, a man surnamed Siu, reported feeling unwell and was sent to the nearby Caritas Medical Centre with minor injuries. The passenger, surnamed Chan, was not hurt.
