The blaze began shortly before 5pm in a flat in Tower 2 of the Elegant Terrace development on Conduit Road.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and put out the flames within about 15 minutes.

They found a man, 77, unconscious inside the 1,076 sq ft flat. He was taken to Ruttonjee Hospital in Wan Chai, where he was declared dead at 6.48pm.

About 50 people were able to evacuate safely, either on their own or with help from emergency responders.

The authorities said a preliminary investigation found no suspicious circumstances and it would look into the possibility that a short circuit in an extension board caused the blaze.
