The veteran star succumbed to oesophageal cancer in Beijing on September 1, said Tenky Tin Kai-man, who had known Chui for about 40 years.

Chui’s wife died of a heart attack shortly after she took care of her husband’s funeral arrangements. She was around 30 years younger than him.

“I was told that he died of oesophageal cancer. He had not told others he had such a problem and most of his friends in Hong Kong did not know about it. We do not know how long he suffered from it,” said Tin, a spokesman for the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers.

“It was very sad. I was also told his wife died shortly after Chui’s funeral arrangements. Possibly Chui’s death left her in pain and depression.”

Tin first met Chui during the 1979 kung fu television drama Reincarnated.
