Hong Kong’s new flag stadium, Kai Tak Sports Park, will open next March, the city’s sports minister has vowed, while revealing the government will consider buying broadcasting rights again for the next Olympic Games.

Kevin Yeung Yun-hung, secretary for culture, sports and tourism, said in an televised interview on Monday that the park, which includes a 50,000-seat main stadium, would open next March, following the completion of its main structures and facilities by the end of this year.

Operated by a subsidiary of New World Development Company, the HK$30 billion (US$3.84 billion) park includes a public sports ground, an indoor sports centre and the main stadium. It was scheduled to be completed by June 2023 but the launch was delayed, with officials previously citing impacts on shipments during the Covid pandemic.

Yeung said drills and trial runs would be carried out in stages, and include testing the main stadium, logistics and facilities in the first quarter of next year.

He said the trials would help the government prepare for the 15th National Games in November next year, adding that negotiations with mainland Chinese authorities were already under way.

“This represents both a great challenge and an opportunity for the future,” Yeung said
