A Hong Kong customs officer died in hospital early on Tuesday after his car skidded off a bridge leading to Shenzhen and plunged dozens of metres down to the sea, the Post learned.
Police said he was sent to Tin Shui Wai Hospital after he was pulled from the wreckage. The driver was a customs officer who was heading to work at the port, a source said. He succumbed to his injuries at around 1.30am.
The fall was estimated by a Post photographer at the scene to have been dozens of metres, perhaps as many as 50 (164 feet).
It appeared the vehicle rolled before going over the railing, which was intact. Debris could be seen littering the point where the car went over.

Police said they received a report at around 9pm the private car travelling toward the mainland Chinese city via the Shenzhen Bay Bridge had plunged into the water.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene to carry out a rescue, with authorities beginning a sweep of nearby waters.
A police spokesman said at around 11pm that rescuers had only recovered debris from the vehicle and there were skid marks on the bridge.
Commissioner of Customs and Excise Louise Ho Pui-shan confirmed the death of the officer stationed at the Shenzhen Bay Port on his way to work.
Ho, who visited the officer’s family in hospital, added that the department was saddened by the fatal traffic accident and expressed her deepest condolences.
She revealed that the victim joined customs in 1999 and was responsible for cargo clearance at the port.

Police Chief Inspector Chui Wing-luen said during a press briefing the road was dry and there was no ongoing maintenance work at the time of the accident.
“Officers found two skid marks on the fast lane of the road and a damaged road maintenance sign on the slow lane,” he said.
“There were also signs of impact on the railings. We believe the vehicle plunged off the bridge after the accident.”
Chui added that there were no CCTV cameras at the location, but officers would examine the vehicle and attempt to determine its speed at the time of the incident.
It took the Fire Services Department’s diving team more than two hours to locate the vehicle, with rescuers recovering the driver’s body from the car at around midnight.
Assistant divisional officer Yu Wai-wah noted that the shallow water, dark environment and low underwater visibility presented challenges to the rescue operation.

The sea-crossing highway bridge is part of Hong Kong’s Route 10 and leads to Shenzhen Bay Port.
The control point at Shenzhen Bay was Hong Kong’s first port with a co-location arrangement, meaning the city’s law enforcement officers can fully exercise Hong Kong laws there.
The bridge opened to traffic on July 1, 2007, and stretches from Hong Kong’s Yuen Long to Shenzhen’s Nanshan for a length of 5.5km (3.4 miles).
