Hong Kong worker dies after being struck by steel pipes in cargo loading yard

  • Man, 55, was helping to secure load of pipes, but three came loose and fell off truck

A Hong Kong worker died in hospital on Monday after he was hit by steel pipes in a cargo loading area, the second fatal industrial accident of its kind in a week.

The 55-year-old man was helping to secure a load of pipes onto a truck when the incident happened.

The three pipes, all six metres (20ft) long with a diameter of about 25cm, came loose, fell off the truck and hit the worker.

He collapsed with head injuries and lost consciousness.

The incident happened at about 2.15pm at the New Yau Ma Tei Public Cargo Working Area on Hoi Fai Road in Tai Kok Tsui.

Colleagues alerted emergency services and the man was rushed to nearby Kwong Wah Hospital in Yau Ma Tei, but he was pronounced dead soon after arrival.
