Hong Kong solo hiker dies in hospital hours after being found following 15-hour search

  • Search for man, 56, began at around 7.40pm on Sunday after his wife reported him missing

A Hong Kong hiker died in hospital on Monday night, hours after he was found during a land-and-air search in the eastern New Territories.

The man, 56, was found unconscious in a bushy area of a spot commonly known as “Blade Ridge” at the eastern edge of Clear Water Bay Country Park, police said.

He was located through his mobile phone’s signal and taken by helicopter to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan at around 11.10am on Monday, the force said.

The man, who worked as a guard escorting cash, had been in a critical condition before he died at 7.25pm.

The search for the man, a frequent weekend hiker, began at around 7.40pm on Sunday after his wife reported him missing to authorities.

She told them her husband had gone hiking in Sai Kung in the morning but had become unreachable later in the day.

Police, the Fire Services Department and Civil Aid Service dispatched search and rescue personnel to the area, while the Government Flying Service deployed a helicopter to conduct a sweep near Clear Water Bay Peninsula.

The man’s family also shared missing person posts online that included security footage of when he left his home at Kwong Ming Court in Tseung Kwan O at around 7.45am on Sunday.

The family last heard from him at 11am on Sunday, when he sent photos and clips of his hike along the Lung Ha Wan Country Trail and as he passed Tai Leng Tung Viewing Point in Clear Water Bay Country Park.

The man had also told them he would return home between 2pm and 3pm.
