Hong Kong restaurant worker taken to hospital after right hand gets stuck in meat grinder

  • Emergency personnel failed to free woman’s hand from machine she was using shortly before 9.30am at Hon Po Restaurant

A Hong Kong restaurant worker was taken to hospital on Wednesday after she got her right hand stuck in a meat grinder and emergency personnel failed to free her at the scene.

The woman was using the machine at Hon Po Restaurant on To Kwa Road in Hung Hom shortly before 9.30am when her hand became trapped inside.

Firefighters and paramedics arrived at the restaurant after receiving a report of an industrial accident from the kitchen worker’s colleagues, according to police.

A doctor and a nurse were also called in.

After failing to free her hand, emergency personnel carried the woman out on a stretcher about an hour later along with the machine part, which measures 60cm (24 inches) in width and 20cm in height.

A photo posted online shows the woman being taken to an ambulance, with a red towel covering her arm and the machine part.

A police spokesman said the woman was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei for treatment, adding the Labour Department had also been informed about the accident.
