Hong Kong police officer dies in suspected suicide at marine harbour division base

  • Officer, 51, found injured in changing room at Sai Wan Ho base in afternoon; pronounced dead at the scene
A Hong Kong police officer was suspected to have taken his own life on Sunday using his service pistol at a marine division base, the force said.

A force spokesman said the male officer, 51, was found injured inside a changing room at the divisional base in Sai Wan Ho, in the east of Hong Kong Island, at about 3.20pm.

The officer, who was attached to the inshore patrol subunit of the marine harbour division, was pronounced dead at the scene, he said. The officer was a senior constable, the Post learned.

The spokesman said: “A service pistol was found next to the deceased.”

He added that upon initial investigation, it was believed that the officer killed himself with the gun.

The force expressed sorrow and regret over the officer’s death and extended its sympathy to family members and said it would offer them timely assistance.

A postmortem examination will be conducted to establish the cause of death.

The marine regional crime unit is investigating.
