Applications to open for first batch of 4,440 Hong Kong ‘light public housing’ flats on June 24
- Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho says rents for flats in Yuen Long and Ngau Tau Kok will range from HK$740 to HK$2,650
Applications will open for more than 4,400 temporary public housing flats in about 10 days, with rents pegged at as little as HK$740 (US$94) a month, Hong Kong’s housing minister has said.
Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho Wing-yin said on Thursday that the first batch of 4,440 “light public housing” flats – located in Yuen Long and Ngau Tau Kok – had rents ranging from HK$740 for a 140 sq ft home to HK$2,650 for 334 sq ft.
“Tenants can apply for light public housing from June 24 while they are expected to move into the Yuen Long and Ngau Tau Kok ones by the first quarter and second quarter of 2025 respectively,” Ho said.
She added that those who submitted applications from June 24 to July 15 would be given “early bird” priority, while others could still apply after this period.
“It is important for children to live in a comfortable environment. Some organisations reflected that it is essential to move children from a poor environment, with good operators taking care of them,” Ho added.
The Yuen Long site has 2,150 flats for either one to two people or households of three to four and is surrounded by community facilities, with tenants able to take a bus or minibus to the city centre.
