Tens of thousands of people flocked to one of Hong Kong’s most popular shopping districts for the return of the annual Lunar New Year parade after a five-year break.

Undeterred by cold weather on the first day of the Year of the Dragon, many of the estimated 44,000 revellers lined the streets of Tsim Sha Tsui hours ahead of the Saturday night extravaganza to secure the best vantage points to see nine colourful floats and 29 performing groups.

The parade, a Lunar New Year holiday fixture, was last held in 2019. It was cancelled in subsequent years because of anti-government protests and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Organisers said the line-up this year was the strongest ever. Highlights included Japanese all-women dance group Avantgardey – a finalist in America’s Got Talent 2023 – Spain’s Light Dancers and Universe of Lights from Germany.

More than two dozen other local and international groups – from mainland China, the United States, the Philippines and elsewhere – captivated spectators, while the flight crew of Hong Kong flag carrier Cathay Pacific Airways, the sponsor of the parade, delivered the signature dance act.
