Another batch of some 356,000 Hongkongers can expect to start receiving the HK$10,000 (US$1,290) cash handout from Wednesday, five days ahead of the original schedule, the government has announced.

But the early relief may not be possible for some of those living in Wong Tai Sin district, an area hard hit by the latest wave of the Covid-19 outbreak in the city.

Delays can be expected for those Wong Tai Sin residents who had submitted registration forms to Hongkong Post as the seven post offices in the district have been closed until August 2 because of the severity of infections in the area. They will not get the cheque collection notice on Wednesday.

“The time of receiving notifications for cheque collection by some people will ... be affected and notifications may not be received on July 29 simultaneously. The government appeals for the public’s understanding on this,” the authorities said in a statement.

The latest batch involved early birds who had registered with the relief scheme on or before July 18. Those who registered on July 19 or later can expect the payment in about two weeks.
