China’s foreign ministry arm in Hong Kong has slammed Western diplomats’ “provocations” and “poor political theatrics” after at least five envoys made a surprise appearance at Victoria Park on the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown.

An office spokesman denounced the European Union delegation to Hong Kong, as well as the British, US and other countries’ consulates in the city, saying some external forces were going against the tide and stubbornly stirring up issues that had already been concluded.

“Some officials from foreign consulates in Hong Kong, disregarding basic consular ethics and codes of conduct, are staging political dramas, using the pretext of ‘human rights’, playing the old trick of ideological infiltration and peaceful evolution,” the office said in a statement on Tuesday evening.

The spokesman said the acts were intended to create confrontation, incite antagonism and maliciously tarnish China’s image.

“Their malicious intentions of destabilising Hong Kong and containing China are clearly revealed,” he said.

The Commissioner’s Office of China’s Foreign Ministry in Hong Kong urged the consulates to abide by the basic norms of international relations and to stop interfering in the country’s affairs.

On Tuesday, the British, United States, Canadian and Australian consulates in Hong Kong published social media posts to commemorate the anniversary of the crackdown amid uncertainty about public acts of remembrance.
