Hong Kong social worker in legal fight over planned tech hub arrested
Post learns Eddie Tse suspected of lying about old-age allowance and public rental application
A social worker who received court permission to challenge the government’s conditional approval of an environmental study for a new technology hub near Hong Kong’s border with mainland China has been arrested on suspicion of deception, the Post has learned.
Eddie Tse Sai-kit was suspected of deceiving authorities over his old-age living allowance and public rental housing application and was released on bail on Friday, an insider said.
Tse allegedly made false statements and concealed his actual income when he applied for the allowance and a flat, the source said. The insider said Tse claimed his income fell below the application limit.
In a reply to the Post, police said they had arrested a man surnamed Tse, 67, who was suspected of deception.
The force warned that any person who used deceptive means, including concealing information or making false statements, and gained benefits faced up to 14 years in prison upon conviction.
Both the Housing Department and Social Welfare Department told the Post that they would not comment on the case as it was under police investigation.
