Police said they received a report of smoke from a security guard at around 7.20am on Friday at the flat in Kai Yin House at Kai Yip Estate, a public housing development in Kowloon Bay.

Firefighters and police officers found the man unconscious when they arrived.

A government spokesman said food was being cooked in the flat’s kitchen when the smoke was spotted.

The man was sent to United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong, where he was later declared dead. An autopsy will be conducted to ascertain the cause of death.

Last month, a 65-year-old man died and his 31-year-old daughter was injured after a fire broke out in his flat in Chai Wan, with investigations finding that a short circuit in a mobile phone charger had caused the blaze.
