Man arrested at Hong Kong airport after customs finds HK$500,000 worth of cocaine on him
Man arrived on Sunday and was detained during clearance, after which he discharged HK$500,000 worth of cocaine concealed in his body
A man from Nigeria has been detained at the Hong Kong International Airport on suspicion of carrying more than HK$500,000 (US$64,250) worth of cocaine concealed in his body.
Customs officers said on Sunday that they became suspicious of the 54-year-old man during clearance after he arrived from Lagos, Nigeria, via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Friday.
He was subsequently escorted to hospital for examination. and medical personnel confirmed the presence of foreign objects inside the him, leading to his arrest.
As of 5pm on Sunday, the man had discharged 38 pellets of suspected cocaine weighing about 680 grams with a market value HK$560,000.
The arrested individual was later charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. He will appear at West Kowloon Court on Monday.
Customs said it would continue to apply a risk assessment approach to cross-border crimes to combat transnational drug trafficking activities.
